It Is Finished

They took Him.

They took Him in the night.

In silence.

In secrecy.

In total darkness.

Total darkness hovered over and around Him.

Total darkness sneered its ugly head in its too-soon belief that it had won.

The final word—finally had by Hell’s hand and Rebellion’s Evil Persuasion.

The lashing whip, the dragging cross, the driving nails

Everything lined up perfectly for the moment of victory for the Father of Lies

Everything ready to establish Hell’s kingdom.

But when the Son of God was lifted up, so was the Father’s glory established over all of history.

And Heaven’s victory was declared as that cross held our suffering Savior

It is finished

It is done

The moment His spirit committed itself into the hands of the Father

The moment Death thought it had won

It is finished was uttered, and the Enemy’s plan was undone

It is finished.

The victory cry of Heaven rang out with the awakening of dead saints and the Holy of Holies dropping away the divide.

It is finished.

And the grave opened up.

It is finished.

Year after year after year, I am astonished. For this great promise told to thousands of years and untold numbers of people has been fulfilled, and here we sit, on the other side of the cross. Totally awake to the Kingdom realities of living in the Right Now.

We are awake because He suffered.

We are awake because He died.

We are awake because Death never gets the last word with This King.

Death never gets the last word.

Because of the sacrifice, Death ends in Life now.

We rejoice at His first coming and look forward with great longing to His next—where we will awaken into Full Life and Likeness and Glory.

We rejoice at His first coming and look forward to the moment when we will see Him face to face and walk with Him hand in hand.

For that moment of Final Awakening.

For that moment of Great Anticipation.

We wait and look forward to That One Day when everything will be settled under His Good Rule.

We rejoice at the Sacrifice and look forward to the Final Fulfillment—

“All their life in this world and all their adventures had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on for ever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.” (C.S. Lewis)

We sit in Joyful Waiting for the Great Story that time and this world are ushering in—

The Story that has been waiting for Our Eternities since eternity past.

This Story that only pulls us further into the Love of the King of kings and Lord of lords Who, for some reason beyond my understanding, is held fast in Love with us—for He Himself is Love, and He cannot deny Himself.

“And this is the marvel of marvels, that he called me Beloved, me who am but as a dog.” (C.S. Lewis)
